This post jumps back into the series on sleep problems. I want to share a personal experience with the prescription medication Ambien.
My 96 year old mother began to have serious sleeping problems about two years ago. In fact, it was so serious that she got her days and nights turned around. She was awake all night and slept during the day. Normally, I wouldn’t consider that to be such a great problem, but the daytime sleep was very sporadic and at times she would fall to sleep while eating at the table. If not for the fast reaction of other people, there are times when she literally would have ended up with her face in the plate of food in front of her.
Her doctor prescribed Ambien in a fairly mild dose. Now, granted, she started sleeping at night, but had terrible nightmares… I mean the being chased by someone with a bloody axe kind. And the crazy thing was that she started halicinating during the day. She was deaf, but could hear music playing from an imaginary radio. She saw children playing in her living room. She saw the floor full of snakes. She literally thought that the things she saw were real, and when I told her there really weren’t any snakes or children she thought she was going crazy.
I stopped her from taking the Ambien and right away that halucinations went away. It was far too great a price to pay for sleeping at night. I’ll talk about some other solutions that worked in future posts.
Boy do I know what it’s like to not be able to sleep well…
I had a huge problem getting a good night’s sleep. It was tough getting to sleep and even tougher staying asleep. I had all the 2AM and 3AM television schedules memorized and Mozilla got more that its fair share of use. Yuk… the lack of sleep totally messed up the next day. I couldn’t focus to get anything done, so the job was becoming a joke. My friends thought I was “Mr. Clumsy” because I kept having accidents and “Mr. Grumpy” [I even got a Disney Grumpy 7 Dwarfs hat] because my mood was usually pretty bad.
I did some reading and found out that when you miss sleep you can wind up with problems like getting sick easily, hallucinations, tremors, high blood pressure, and even type 2 diabetes… oh and psychosis [although there are some friends who might say I didn't have to worry about getting that]. Anyway, the lack of sleep is a pretty serious thing. And sleep apnea and snoring can drive your sleep partner crazy, so something has to be done about all this.
The problem is that sleep mediciations really can be habit forming… even the mild ones like Tylenol PM… and who wants to wear tubes in their nose to remedy sleep apnea? Not me! So, its important that natural sleep remedies be found. Guess what, even some of the natural sleep remedies aren’t so good for you.
So, this begins a series of posts about what I have discovered along the journey to get a good night’s sleep. What worked… what didn’t… what helped… what hindered… and, yes, now I am getting a great night’s sleep without taking any prescription or over the counter medications whatsoever. If you’re having or have had this problem share what’s worked for you.
Stay tuned for more.
