In order to have a sound sleep the human energy system must enter a Yin state. If the energy is in a Yang state sleep difficulties are likely to result. These sleep problems can arise from both excess and deficiency conditions. Essentially that means either too much Yang energy or too little Yin energy. In Chinese Medicine the most common energy patterns that result in too little sleep are
· Blood deficiency resulting in too little Yin
· Heart and Kidney Yin deficiency
· Timid (deficient) Gallbladder
· Heart Fire resulting in excess Yang
· Liver Fire resulting in excess Yang
· Phlegm Heat resulting in excess Yang
· Wind Heat resulting in excess Yang
In general, Yin Deficiency is very common. Difficulty falling asleep, heart palpitations, general tiredness, poor appetite, blurred vision, dizziness when awake, poor memory, and a pale face are all indications of Blood Deficiency. You can eat foods that support blood like beef, spinach, eggs, red grapes, vitamin A, vitamin B12, Biotin, Choline, Folic Acid, Inosital, and vitamin E.
The indications for Heart and Kidney Yin Deficiency include waking frequently during the night coupled with difficulty falling asleep, dry throat, sweating during the night, poor memory, heart palpitations, dizziness when awake, mental restlessness, ringing in the ears, and lower backache.
Timid Gallbladder is often coupled with Heart Deficiency. Its principle indications are waking up early and not being able to get back to sleep, sleeping lightly, profuse dreaming, being easily startled, timidity, tiredness, breathlessness, and lack of assertiveness. Timid Gallbladder is also very common.
Waking up during the night, nightmares, mental restlessness during the day, dreams about flying, thirst, and heart palpitations are indications of Heart Fire. An option is to eat foods that benefit the heart including beef, beets, cherries, corn, fennel, green tea, mango, melons, milk, shitake mushrooms, and white rice.
Restlessness in sleep, nightmares, irritability during the day, a bitter taste in the mouth, thirst, and headaches indicate Liver Fire. Foods that support the liver include beef, beets, celery, cheese, garlic, Biotin, Folic Acid, vitamin K, Beta-carotene, Iodine, Manganese, Silicon, and Zinc.
Restlessness in sleep, tossing and turning, feelings of heaviness, dizziness during waking, nausea, lack of appetite, and a sticky taste in the mouth all indicate Phlegm Heat. The best approach to take is to eliminate phlegm and dampness causing foods in your diet. That includes dairy products, oily foods, fried foods, excessive eating, wheat, pork, alcohol, sugar and sweets, oats, pears, and beef. Foods to eat include aduki bean sprouts, alfalfa, asparagus, barley, celery, corn, garlic, horse radish, jasmine tea, kidney beans, lemon, onion, oregano, parsley, peppermint, radish, turnip, almonds, tofu, grapefruit, and thyme.
If you experience any of the above set of symptoms on a regular basis and have difficulty sleeping, then Chinese Medicine may be an excellent alternative for you. However, as you may notice, some symptoms are common to multiple conditions. A qualified Chinese Medicine practitioner should be able to help diagnose exactly which condition you are experiencing and should be able to help you balance your energy. Acupuncture, herbs, and acupressure all may be helpful to restore the balance of energy. However, for long term results, it’s a good idea to consider what in your lifestyle is resulting in energy imbalance. Diet is one of the most important considerations in this respect.
There are also energy balancing tools that you can use. These will be covered in future posts.
Part 3 of the Human Energy Field video podcast series
As a brief review, remember that Part 1 described the convergence of modern science and ancient metaphysics on the idea that subtle vibrational energy manifests into denser and denser forms ending in the material world of our senses. And Part 2 described the descent of the human energy field from the subtlest Nadis through the Mental Energy Body, the Emotional Energy Body, the Physical Energy Field, and finally into the physical body.
Today we are going to discuss the system of chakras or energy centers in the body. This is a term that you may have encountered before because it has gained quite a bit of popularity. Despite that popularity, it’s extremely interesting that the system of chakras really isn’t emphasized in oriental medicine, and I suppose that’s because Traditional Chinese Medicine as taught in acupuncture schools doesn’t teach a method to treat the chakras in any way. I’m going to present the chakras in a slightly different way that will unify the system of chakras and the system of the acupuncture points in a later podcast.
The chakras are pervasive in all cultures
It’s really amazing how widespread the idea of chakras and energy centers really is. Religious art from all cultures depicts energy centers in what are commonly called halos surrounding people’s heads. I use the word people here because these halos are not restricted to just gods and angels. It’s clear that people at some level of spiritual development are viewed as also having halos What’s surprising is that the system of chakras is also depicted in one of the most common symbols associated with modern medicine, the caduceus. I’m sure you’ve seen this image before. It actually is a direct symbol for two of the chakras and the main energy channel in the body. I’ll bet most doctors would be shocked if they knew the metaphysical nature of this image. So, let’s start with this main energy channel…
The main energy channel
The main energy channel goes from the base of the spine to the top of the head. It goes by different names in different cultures. In kundalini yoga it’s call the Shushuma. In esoteric Chinese medicine it’s called the Taiji Pole. The agreement among cultures is that it’s the main energy conduit in the body and it connects each individual human being to the universe. The importance of this channel cannot be over emphasized. In fact, in esoteric Chinese Medicine this main channel is said to be established in the fetus after the first few cell divisions in the formation of the body. Everything else forms from it.
The chakra energy centers
The energy centers, or chakras, come from within the main energy channel. In different cultures, there are different numbers of chakras, but the most universally accepted model consists of seven primary chakras located in the body along the main energy channel. These chakras extend from the middle of the body to specific locations on both the front and the back of the body known as GATES. There are five gates on the front and back of the body plus the crown chakra on the very top of the head and the root chakra at the base of the spine.
Previous podcasts described the information component of the building block energy, Qi. That information component is often described as frequencies of vibration… and the important thing to understand is that each chakra is sensitive to specific vibrational frequencies… or types of information. The centers both receive information from the universe and send information to the universe. They are in a constant state of information exchange. In a sense they are like central switching stations to move specific kinds of information and energy around in the body.
The three most important chakras
All seven chakras are important, but three seem to get the most attention. They are associated with the three energetic regions of the body known in Chinese Medicine as the Lower Dantian, the Middle Dantian, and the Upper Dantian. There are specific acupuncture points for these regions that match the locations of the chakra GATES on the body.
The navel chakra is at a point just below the belly button. A keyword associated with this chakra is Dynamism. It’s extremely important for the physical body and the physical energy body. It’s the most important energy center in the martial arts for both physical power and grounding. It’s the energy center related to desire, particularly physical and sexual desire… but also to the desire for power and, in the most negative sense to greed. It links directly to the Qi of the kidney and bladder meridians.
The heart chakra is located in the center of the chest. The keyword for this chakra is Empowerment and it is strongly associated with the emotions and the emotional energy body. This chakra is linked to the Qi of the heart, lungs, and circulatory system. It is also regarded as the main center associated with internal feelings of compassion, love of humanity, and empathy. Negative energetic manifestations of this center include the inability to give or receive love. This center is the gateway for agape, or spiritual love.
The third eye chakra is located between the eyebrows. In acupuncture, it’s associated with the Yintang special point. The keywords for this chakra are Perception and Control. It is strongly associated with the mental energy body and, hence, with thought and thought forms. Negative manifestations in this chakra are associated with overemphasis on the rational mind, seeing only the obvious… but positive manifestations focus on clairvoyant sight.
These three chakras establish what the ancient philosophers of China called the relationship of man being between heaven and earth. The third eye chakra establishes the human being’s link to heaven. The navel chakra establishes the human being’s link to earth. And the heart chakra establish the human beings’ links to each other.
Imagine looking at a physical body from the side with the front of the body at the top and the main energy channel in the middle. The physical energy body, emotional energy body, and mental energy body radiate outward to different distances. And the Nadis connect this energy system to the universe. The chakras emanate from the central energy channel and permeate all the energy bodies both on the front and back of the body.
The seven chakras are not the only energy centers in the body. There are many others. For example, there are smaller centers in the palms of the hands… and as you’ll see later on, the individual acupuncture points are small centers of energy. Focus on the information component of Qi. In that sense, the chakras are the major points for processing information in the body. More refined information processing is done in other energy centers and in the acupoints.
The energy of the universe at all vibrational frequencies moves in the central channel. The chakra takes the vibration frequencies that it responds to and passes them on to its energy sub systems. One of the small energy centers takes the vibration frequencies that it responds to and passes on the energetic information… perhaps to one of the organs in the body. This all works great until something is out of balance and distorts the flow of information… but that will be the subject of future podcasts.
Hi, this is Ron Morefield welcoming you to another Enjoy A Better World video podcast. This podcast is the second in our series on the human energy field. In the last podcast, the similarity between the models of the universe of modern physics and ancient, particularly oriental, medicine was discussed. That similarity can be summarized in the idea that the most fundamental building blocks of the universe are multi-dimensional, vibrations, and they become denser and denser to form the world of gross matter that we know with our ordinary senses. Today we’ll take a more in depth look at the model of the human energy field.
What Qi or Chi is All About
The Chinese refer to the basic energy building block as Qi. Other cultures call it by other names, and in Star Wars it’s called The Force. Whatever the name, this building block consists of two main components. The first component is Power, or Force. This is the most common way of thinking of Qi because the idea of Qi was introduced to the west mainly through martial arts… and let’s face it, breaking boards and bricks is all about Power. The second component is information. It is often called vibration, but I think information is much clearer. Really, this is the most important component, and the way to understand it is to think of a television signal. A television signal can get to the television in different ways. Two of them are through a broadcast signal or through a cable. The broadcast signal is extremely powerful, in some cases millions of watts. The cable signal is extremely weak. So, the power is different depending on how the signal is getting to the TV set… but the power doesn’t get you a picture or sound. What does get you the picture and sound is the information contained in the signal and the information is identical for both the broadcast signal and the cable signal. The broadcast signal represents the extreme as far as power goes… and a CD represents the extreme as far as information goes because, in a sense it is pure information. So, the information component of Qi is extremely important, because it’s that informational part that allows Qi to manifest as rocks, frogs, flowers, dogs, cats, and human beings. In a sense, you can think of the world as we know it as a giant three dimensional TV set that plays the channels of information in the Qi.
Qi manifests through the human aura energy field
The descriptions of the human energy field are remarkably similar from culture to culture… and the model presented here is, for the most part, universally agreed to. As with the name Qi, the different aspects of the energy field are called different things, but the ideas are the same.
Nadis
At the most subtle level, human beings are connected to the universe by a countless number of energetic filaments. In ayurevedic medicine and yoga these filaments are called the nadis. The nadis are literally the information connection to the universe. Humans are in a state of constant communication back and forth with the universe by means of the nadis… and actually, individual human beings really are the same as the universe. They’re more like whirlpools in water. They appear to be individual entities, but they’re made of the same water. Humans are the same. They’re the same stuff as the universe. From a modern physics viewpoint, at this subtle level humans are constantly exchanging fundamental particles with each other, the world, and the universe.
Mental Energy Body
At a slightly denser level is the mental body. As the diagram indicates, the mental body can be detected at a distance from the physical body. It’s the world that’s created by the ideas or thought forms within your mind. This is a new concept for many people, but I think it’s best expressed in the Buddhist notion of the mind as being a sixth sense of perception. Your eyes get a physical impression of an object, but it’s really just a collection of neurological impulses. It’s the mind that puts these impulses together. It says… this is round, three dimensional, and it bounces. It must be a “Ball”. A little self reflection will show you how powerful the mental body really is at shaping our world. In fact, we live in a world of mental abstractions. Take the idea of “freedom” for example. This is a very powerful idea, yet it is completely abstract. There is nothing that we can grasp and say, “This is a freedom” in the same way we can grasp a rock and say “This is a rock.” But look at the human effort that’s been bound to the idea of freedom. Wars have been fought over this idea.
Emotional Energy Body
At a little denser level is the emotional body. As the name suggests, this is the region in which the emotions hang out. The emotional body can be detected a little closer to the physical body than the mental body. Let me take a second to explain that. The nature of computer screens and diagrams is that these different components of the human energy field look like layers of an onion. But, that really isn’t the case. They each go all the way into the body, but the less dense they are, the further they extend out from the body. So, the emotional body doesn’t extend out as far as the mental body, and the mental body doesn’t extend out as far as the nadis. Yet, they all permeate the physical body.
Physical Energy Body
At a still denser lever you find the physical energy body. The best way to think of this part of the energy field is as an energetic mold for the actual physical body. You can think of the physical molecules and DNA as being poured into this energetic mold to form the human physical body.
The Physical Body
And, finally, at the most dense level is the actual physical body itself. Subtle energy actually descends into matter. Now consider for a moment that the western medical point of view is that the matter and DNA and body comes first and any energy like that detected by an EKG or EEG comes from the body. This is really the opposite viewpoint.
Subtle Energy Rules
It’s critically important to understand that when it comes to Qi, Subtle Energy Rules. The fact is that strong emotions can have adverse effects on the human body itself and can be an important factor in disease. In the same way, mental distortions like those found in what’s called schizophrenia can impact the emotions and the physical body. In the last podcast I mentioned that physics cann’t tell us how the multi-dimensional vibrational constituents of the universe figure out how to become rocks, trees, boats, and people… and that brings us back to the information component of Qi. The thing that makes you have the physical body you actually have is the informational component of the Qi manifesting through the nadis, the mental body, the emotional body, the physical energy body, and the physical body. You tune in to the channel of your own universal blueprint. And just like a TV signal that can be fuzzy and misshapen with lots of static if the information signal is distorted, it’s possible for the universal blueprint information to be distorted in the mental, emotional, and physical energy bodies… but more on that in future podcasts.
