The western medicine theory of disease

In western medicine, you get sick when germs and viruses invade your body and start growing. The germs and viruses are attacked by anti-bodies in your immune system and those anti-bodies are helped along by modern drugs. Diseases may also arise from genetic causes… and again, prescription medications are the approach taken to find a cure. You may also have something wrong with you structurally, and, of course the solution is surgery or radiation. Generally speaking people are content to use western medicine for things like common colds. They only turn to other approaches when the western treatments either don’t work or scare the heck out of them.

The Chinese Medicine theory of disease

We learned that in the human energy field, subtle energy rules over dense matter and that means that in energetic medicine disease begins IN the human energy field. The Chinese Medicine point of view is that the body is naturally protected by a special type of energy called the Wei Qi. You can think of the Wei Qi as an energetic shield for the body like the energy shields of the starship Enterprise. The energetic information from diseases cannot reach the physical body when the Wei Qi is strong, but when it’s weak, the energetic information from diseases can reach your physical body and the bacteria and viruses physically manifest and flourish in your body. That’s the Chinese Medicine explanation of why we sometimes get sick and sometimes don’t even though bacteria and viruses are constantly present.

The Wei Qi becomes weak because of energy imbalances in the main or extraordinary meridians that are caused by energy flow that is too weak, too strong, blocked or reversed. When those energy imbalances are restored to normal, the Wei Qi is also restored and the physical manifestations of disease go away. Energy imbalance in the meridians results from a combination of External Factors penetrating the Wei Qi and Internal factors like Improper Diet, Physical Toxins, Improper Exercise, Overwork, and Stress. There is a lot more to Chinese Medicine theories of disease, but right now I want to extend this Chinese Model of disease based on energy.

The Energetic Medicine theory of disease

What about the shushumna channel and seven chakras? Typical Chinese Medicine texts make notice of a connection between the physical organs and their meridian and emotional and mental states, but they really don’t discuss the underlying mechanism because Traditional Chinese Medicine ignores the energy bodies, the chakras and the shushuma channel. Like the meridians, the flow of energetic information in the chakras can be too weak, excessive, blocked or even reversed. Energetic medicine practitioners can restore the natural balance of energy here too.

Recall that the key component of an energy signal is the information it contains. In fact, the human energy system is in a state of constant energetic information exchange within itself and with the world, and part of the information that is received is the energetic blueprint for the body. When the shushumna and chakra system is out of balance, the information passing through the chakras is distorted. That may lead to actual physical diseases like structural or genetic damage. Distortions might also manifest as what amounts to a disease anywhere in the human energy field… and they cause further distortions. The distorted information propagates through the entire human energy field and might manifest as dis-ease anywhere. Energy healing consists of balancing energy in the main and extraordinary meridians, balancing energy flow in the chakras, ensuring the proper flow of energy in the main Shushumna channel, and removing distortions from anywhere in the entire human energy field.

One final thought on the energetic model… but it’s really important because, frankly, it addresses something that western medical theories cannot even touch…

In a sense, the energetic model might say we are normally in a state of dis-ease. That’s because our higher spiritual energies are not generally in balance with the universe… but energetic approaches to healing also provide for the possibility of spiritual unfolding. We are in a natural state of energetic balance with the universe if only we rid ourselves of the energetic garbage.

There are really two kinds of resonance I want to focus on. The first is harmonic resonance… and I’m sure that most people have seen it demonstrated in school…  Do you remember the experiment where one tuning fork is struck and starts to vibrate… And then a second identical tuning fork also begins to vibrate even though it has’nt been struck? That’s an example of harmonic resonance. The basic idea is that one thing that is in a state of vibration can have an effect on another thing that is somehow in tune with those vibrations.

The second type of resonance I’ll call wave resonance. In this type of resonance there are two things that are vibrating. The first one is vibrating at a certain frequency and phase. If the second thing vibrates at the same frequency and phase then the resulting vibration from both will be stronger. On the other hand if the second vibration is out of phase with the first, then the resulting vibration will be weaker… and that can be called dissonance. So, the basic idea is that when two objects are in a state of vibration, the resulting vibration from both depends on the degree to which they’re in phase or, the degree to which they are in resonance or dissonance.

We can sum this up with two basic principles. First that one object will react to another vibrating object when it’s somehow tuned to that object. For the moment, don’t worry about what tuned actually means, but think of it in terms of the two tuning forks or tuning in to a radio station. Second, when two vibrating objects are in the presence of each other their vibrations will interact to produce a resulting vibration that is either stronger or weaker depending on the extent to which the two vibrating objects are in resonance. These two ideas have been presented in terms of only two objects, but the same idea can be applied to hundreds or thousands of objects or more.

Now, let’s relate this to the Human Energy Field by returning to the basic building block of the universe, Qi. Qi is in a state of vibration. Well, actually, there are millions and millions of vibrations, not just one. The physical, emotional, and mental energy bodies are in a state of vibration.. and so are the chakras and meridians. These vibrations within the body interact resonantly and dissonantly. And we interact with other people and other things in the environment both resonantly and dissonantly because everything… and I mean everything has vibratory information. The fact is that we’re not isolated beings in the universe. Instead, we’re constantly interacting with everything… and we know that both from the ancient teachings about Qi and the most modern teachings of physics… It’s just a little hard for our egos to deal with.

And there is a special relationship to the human nervous system and brain. Objects in the world work through our senses to create certain patterns in our neurosystem. In a sense we can think of these objects like tuning forks that set off certain neurological tuning forks in our brains. That’s really the act of perception and recognition… and that recognition sets off certain energies in our body. A basketball may give rise to enjoyment. The amazing thing is that when we just think of that same object we set up the same resonance in our brain and send the vibration out to the rest of our bodies and to the world. This is a huge leap in thinking because it takes us from the Newtonian marbles of concrete, discrete objects to the world of people, animals, plants, things, emotions, and ideas all interacting with each other at vibrational levels… and the resonant interactions among things result in changes in the human energy field. Some have an overall strengthening or positive effect and others have a weakening or negative effect. That is the essence of enegetic medicine.

Video A – The Basics of Chinese Medicine

Chinese Medicine has been around for thousands of years and has been continuously practiced and documented for 2,500 years. But it comes from a completely different point of view from Western Medicine. Instead of focusing on biology and chemistry, Chinese Medicine puts emphasis on the balance and harmony of the flow of energy in the body. Yet, despite this major departure from the medicine style of the West, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine are equally effective at treating disease.

Video B – Chakras and Meridians

Chinese Medicine describes the flow of energy in the body as being like the flow in energy rivers. They are called the 12 main meridians. There are also vessels for storing energy known as the 8 extraordinary meridians. Yet, Traditional Chinese Medicine does not work with the energy system of the chakras. The meridians, chakras, and main shushumna energy channel must be interconnected and treating any part impacts the whole.
