On Mind Watching

Bodhidharma was responsible for taking Buddhism out of India to China. That allowed it to spread throughout China, Asia, Japan, and other countries in the east. One of his original works is the treatise  On Mind Watching, which teaches the basic practices of observing your own thinking processes.

This is considered a basic text in Buddhist thought and this original translation was done by several students of Myo Bong Snim under his direct supervision. He used the translation sessions as a vehicle for teaching and the text is full of footnotes explaining some of the more subtle points of Buddhist thought. This is a unique translation because his teaching style was to explain the most esoteric concepts then have his students come up with the precise English phrase to represent the concept.

For example, most translations use the phrase The Self or The True Self. However, Bodhidharma teaches that all things inherently have no “self” and that includes human beings. So using a phrase like The Self gives readers the false impression that they actually have a thing called The Self. This selfness they assume is the result of the Mind and the result of the Three Poison Minds affecting it. It is illusory. In translating, the most precise meaning the students could find was conveyed by the phrase, The Original Nature of Mind, which is the Mind prior to the influence of the Poison Minds of Anger, Greed, and Ignorance.

On Lineage

One of the most important works of Bodhidharma is On Lineage.

On Lineage deals with the question of how to see the original nature of the mind directly. This is a most important work by the father of Ch’an.  Each sentence should be memorized, not merely word-by-word, but should be taken to heart.
