weight loss

This is way to easy

The other day I stepped on the scale, and to my amazement, I had dropped nearly 10 pounds. That’s right, 10 pounds. Like a lot of folks, I have been struggling with weight for a few years and have tried different things to lose a few pounds. Ok, so what happened?

  • I didn’t go on any special diet.
  • I didn’t do any special exercise.
  • I didn’t even notice I was losing weight because I kept away from the scale.

What I did do was implement a change in lifestyle… but not a huge one.

The truth is that I have always been the type of person that looks at Pasta Primavera and puts on a few pounds… and forget things like cakes and pies and even those Starbuck’s pastries. Well, it really wasn’t such a conceptual leap to understand that the cakes, pies, pastry, and pasta were not the most conducive thing in the world to dropping weight, but I totally didn’t get that many of the things I had always learned were healthy like whole grain bread, organic brown rice, and bananas were also killers when it came to weight. Well, for lots of people they are.

I had always understood the concept of the glycemic index and glycemic loading, but it didn’t seem to me like I was nearly as much of a glycemic junkie as I really was. The problem is that I do such brain intensive stuff (as opposed to physical stuff) that a reduction in blood sugar created a huge brain fog. So, I would eat a few “healthy” carbs to deal with that. BAD CHOICE!

I got the course by Isabel De Los Rios and found out that I am best suited for protein. I guess its that jungle predator in me 8-).  I also found out that many of the foods I thought were “safe”, were, in fact, part of the problem. So here are the big changes in lifestyle (well, not so big)

  • Obviously, I virtually eliminated high sugar foods (sugar, brown sugar, fructose, etc.) like cookies, pies, cakes, and scones.
  • I started drinking juiced greens instead of smoothies.
  • I didn’t buy any bread or pasta or rice of any kind. I only ate that sort of thing in restaurants…
  • and I stopped going to restaurants as much as possible.

I still eat plenty… enough to feel full, but the weight is coming off.

My advice… see what you need to eat on a permanent basis and stop dieting. Change your life and the weight seems to melt off. Slowly, but definitely.

Don’t read this if you want to loose a quick few pounds

If you want to go on a crash diet to drop a few pounds to fit into that special dress, then don’t read this.

But if you have been struggling with weight for a long time and have tried diet after diet, then this is just the post for you.

Here is the fundamental thing you’ve got to get into your brain. Getting it made a huge difference for me.

You are consistently overweight because you eat too much of the wrong kinds of food, period.

That’s really important to understand. You just don’t know how and what to eat. You don’t think about food like a thin person, and as long as you continue with the wrong eating you will continue to be overweight. That’s it… end of story… and the chances are that you are consuming way too many carbohydrates, including some that are supposed to be healthy like brown rice.

Eating healthy isn’t as hard as you think.

Let me make this really simple. The first thing you need to do is find out if you need to focus on proteins or if you do OK with more carbohydrates. Many people eat carbs, but really should be eating more proteins. There is actually a simple questionnaire you can fill out to determine this. Then, decide to never go on a diet again. Instead, decide to change your patterns of eating in a gradual step by step approach.

So, the first thing to do is eliminate foods that contain hydrogenated oil and lots of sugar (especially high fructose corn syrup). Just take that simple step. Don’t try to do more until you have mastered it. Go through your pantry and toss out the foods that are high in sugar and contain high fructose corn syrup. My rule of thumb is that if sugar or corn syrup is mentioned in the first 4 ingredients listed, or if hydrogenated oil is listed at all, toss it out. Tell your family that you are taking steps to make sure they are going to be health… and have enough will power to not take any crap about this from your kids. You’ve got to be strong.

Second, eliminate any foods containing white flour. That is essentially eating sugar. Again, educate your family about what you are doing. Try to replace breads and grains with veggies.

More hints to come later.

If you want to lose weight, or even if you just want to eat right one of the easiest things you can do is Conscious Eating. What does that mean? Easy, be aware of every food or drink item that you put into your mouth and how it impacts your body.

There are two things you’ll need to do in order to do Conscious Eating. First, you need to actually know what different foods do to your body. The trick is to keep it simple because there is a tremendous amount of information available about all kinds of food. Start with the very basics. You should eat protein, carbs, and fats at every meal. Proteins are meats, poultry, and fish (for now let’s not consider vegetarian sources of protein). Carbs come in two varieties. Cakes, cookies, bread, and other starches are one kind. Fruits and vegetables are another kind. Well, actually, both are carbohydrates, but these two different types have dramatically different impacts on your blood glucose levels. Fats will be in the proteins, and you should eat some unsaturated fat like olive oil. You just need to mix things up a little and not eat the same thing all the time. In addition, do what you can to keep your blood glucose at a more or less constant level. That is a good place to start your knowledge.

Armed with the knowledge, you then need to consciously evaluate the food you eat every time you are about to eat. Ho much protein, what kind of carbohyrates, how much fat. That sort of thing. I think that at one time the idea of saying grace before a meal was a way to do Conscious Eating. Unfortunately, it has devolved into a robotic ritual that many people go through before they mechanically consume the food.

Just be conscious of what you eat and you will find your path to eating healthy and for weight loss quite easy.
