Simple Steps

It’s just a pure simple fact that for a lot of people just getting a little exercise, improving their range of motion, improving their posture, and dropping a few pounds will mean a huge difference in their overall quality of life. I’m talking about all of us who sit for hours and hours each day staring at a computer or with a phone glued to our ear. Let’s face it, if you’re 30 pounds overweight and hunch over a desk to see the computer screen at the weird laptop angle while sipping on a cola then you can stand to make some life changes. The funny thing is how easy it is to get to that point and how easy it is to tell yourself that you’ve always been doing that and it’s perfectly normal. Well, if you’re happy with not being able to move around much without something hurting then don’t do a thing… but if just maybe you would like to change your quality of life a little, then you go out on the hunt for the way to “drop some weight” and “get fit”. So, naturally, you want to find the “best” programs to do that.

The trouble is that when you start looking, boom! you’re immediately overwhelmed. Everybody’s got the latest and greatest way to drop pounds. Low fat… low carb… acai berries… super duper fat burning pills or liquids. It’s the same for exercise. Go to the gym… stay home… get the super workout gym… do yoga… do pilates. Arugh! Now let me tell you a little secret… well actually a pretty big one. The diet and exercise industry makes its money from their products and programs not working. This is right up there with the medical profession making their real money by keeping you sick, not well. Think about it. People spend billions of dollars trying to lose weight and get fit. They spend money trying one program… then trying another… then trying another — got the picture.

Right now I’m spending $29 a month on a gym that I rarely go to because I have had a pretty darn hectic schedule for about 5 months. That brings us to the topic at hand. The best weight loss and fitness programs are the ones that you can sustain. Think about that too. You really don’t want to yoyo diet and exercise on again and off again for the rest of your life, do you? If you just apply that one little test to any diet or exercise program you contemplate, you will immediately separate the wheat from the chaff. The acai berries are for the berries because you don’t want to have to drink that horrible tasting stuff for the rest of your life. The diet pills are useless because you don’t want to have to take them for the rest of your life do you? Even the gym doesn’t make much sense because most people really don’t want to spend time lifting weights and running or walking on a treadmill… And the critical thing you’ve got to get is that if you are 20 or 30 pounds overweight, and if you have aches and pains all the time, and if you look like your always leaning over instead of standing up straight and tall… then you’ve got serious habitual problems that you’ve got to overcome for the rest of your life. A few pills or swallows of magic juice just isn’t going to do it because even if they work in the short term, you’ll just go back to your old habits when you stop the “diet” or “exercise program”… then, guess what, you go back to where you were.

What you really need is something that will empower you to change your life. And that means

  • It’s got to be something you can do now and that you can keep doing in the future.
  • It’s got to be something that you can easily fit into your normal schedule. In fact, it’s really got to make your routine easier and not more complicated.
  • It’s got to be something that you can readily see real progress without having to keep all kinds of charts and diary entries.
  • It’s got to increase your fun and joy in life.
The myth of diet and exercise is that somehow they’ve got to be more work… no pain no gain nonsense. Just the opposite is true. If you can’t find something that’s fun and easy you won’t do it.

I learned two more of the four basic movements — lateral flexion and rocking. I am getting some great results. The key here is that you don’t have to go to a gym or set aside time each day. Best of all, you don’t have to get discouraged because you ey’rexperience those little defeats of not being able to to the complicated yoga pose or lift much weight at the gym. What I am experiencing is that the thing that causes problems for people is that they are designed to move in all sorts of ways, but, mainly because of jobs and lifestyle, end up moving in a few of the repetitive ways. Going to the gym and walking on a treadmill just reinforces the bad stuff. Vitalogy has you do random movements, just to the level of your own capability. I have had ongoing problems with little pains in my neck and knees and after four days of doing the Vitalogy they’re gone… at least for now. I’ll report back. The other really cool thing is that I’ve learned to do the movements for a couple minutes here and there spread throughout the day. Everything I thought I knew about exercise (that didn’t seem to work) has just been tossed out the window.

I’ve recently made a great friend of Will Nelson (no, not the singer) who created a program called Vitalogy. There are three components to Vitalogy–

VitalBody, where you learn simple, easy to do ways of exercising that you can incorporate into your daily activities (you don’t have to go to the gym)

VitalFood where you learn simple ways to prepare healthy foods that fit into a busy lifestyle but still contain the right blend of protein, fats, and carbs.

VitalMInd where you learn how to get your head around your problems and overcome them.

Easy for the over 40 crowd

The really attractive part of Vitalogy is that it really is a great fit for the over 40 crowd who are showing a few extra pounds, don’t move as easily as they used to, have some joints and muscles that hurt on a regular basis, and are beginning to see their youth slip away… but according to Will Nelson, that youth doesn’t have to slip away. You can keep your flexibility and posture by doing simple exercises for a few minutes twice a day… like when you wake up (you don’t even need to get out of bed) and go to sleep. The simple exercises and diet make good health and vitality easy for anyone to make a permanent part of their lives. Check out the video… it’s also a whole lot of fun.

Since I fall into that over 40 group, I’m going to give the Vitalogy 30 day program a try. I’ll be reporting the results on this blog.

Oh, and by the way, if you’re not over 40, Vitalogy works great for you! In fact, if you want to build up the muscle tone, then there are Vitalology exercises and routines designed for just about any level of athletic performance.
