Anti-aging

I learned two more of the four basic movements — lateral flexion and rocking. I am getting some great results. The key here is that you don’t have to go to a gym or set aside time each day. Best of all, you don’t have to get discouraged because you ey’rexperience those little defeats of not being able to to the complicated yoga pose or lift much weight at the gym. What I am experiencing is that the thing that causes problems for people is that they are designed to move in all sorts of ways, but, mainly because of jobs and lifestyle, end up moving in a few of the repetitive ways. Going to the gym and walking on a treadmill just reinforces the bad stuff. Vitalogy has you do random movements, just to the level of your own capability. I have had ongoing problems with little pains in my neck and knees and after four days of doing the Vitalogy they’re gone… at least for now. I’ll report back. The other really cool thing is that I’ve learned to do the movements for a couple minutes here and there spread throughout the day. Everything I thought I knew about exercise (that didn’t seem to work) has just been tossed out the window.

I learned a couple of interesting things so far. It really only takes about five minutes a day to learn the basic movements in VitalBody. So far I’ve learned shaking and rotation. Shaking is pretty much what it sounds like — shaking your body using random movements. The trick is to keep your body relaxed, then shake it. It really loosens up the joints. In the theory I learned that technology has really made us use our bodies in ways that it’s not designed for. We are supposed to be moving instead of sitting in front of computers and TVs… and the non-movement begins to take over our lives as we get older and have more responsibilities. So, the bottom line is that you shake each part of your body to loosen it up. The second movement is rotation. As you’d expect this is rotating your body from side to side around a center axis. The key is rotating specific parts. For example, keeping the pelvis fixed while rotating the trunk, or rotating the neck without rotating the trunk. I’m going to learn the other two movements and have the basic mastery done in about 7 days. Then I just follow the 5 minute routines twice a day. This really is simple!

I can tell just in 2 days that the shaking and rotation really is producing results. I notice it in little things. For example, I just turned my neck to check cars coming from my left while I was driving. Usually, I turn my whole body. This is really cool.

More later…

If you’re anything like me, you sign up at the start of a new year with every intent of following through with the new gym program. You go religiously for about six weeks and then you get bored out of your mind doing endless repetitions with weights. I guess they call them dumbbells for a reason. And do you know that I’ve never ever had a gym call me and ask why I wasn’t showing up even though they were still taking my $39.95 each month. Now don’t get me wrong. I think the gyms are great for those people who actually enjoy using all those machines. It just isn’t for me.

The fact is that I’m one of those baby boomers who has started to realize that my body just isn’t what it used to be when I was in my 20′s and 30′s. Sitting in front of a computer screen most of the day has put a little flab around the middle, and the joints and muscles have begun to hurt a little. It really stinks. It’s a little tough to get up off the floor sometimes, and sometimes when I wake up in the morning the good ole body just doesn’t get going until the hot shower has worked its magic.

So, when I found out about Vitalogy, my ears perked up. Will Nelson, the founder of Vitalogy told me that the body was not really designed for the repetitive exercises in a gym. Well, that struck a major chord. What the body really is designed for is random movements… and in particular four random movements — shaking, rotation, lateral flexion, and rocking. Vitalogy builds an entire exercise program out of those four basic movements and variations on them. These movements can be incorporated into daily life. It’s not necessary to set aside an hour a day to do exercise… who the heck has an extra hour a day. It turns out that a few minutes spread here and there throughout the day — we’re talking maybe 10 minutes a day total — well, that’s enough to make a huge difference in the way people feel. As you get older you stiffen up because of lack of movement and poor posture. Vitalogy restores the movement and posture that is youth.

This sounded too good to be true. On top of that the Vitalogy diet plan was simple. Each meal should contain proteins, fats, and carbs… there are $10 carbs, $100 carbs, and $1000 carbs because thats the price you pay for eating them. For example, a carrot is a $10 carb and a bottle of cola is a $1000 carb. Having proteins, fats, and carbs every single time you eat keeps you from getting cravings and by adjusting the balance of proteins, fats, and carbs you can gain or lose weight. Again, too simple.

So, bottom line is that I am taking Will’s 30 day challenge in the 30 day Vitalogy program. I start tomorrow and will let everyone know the results. Here are the main things I want to fix. I want to drop about 20 pounds. I want to get relief from sore shoulders after sitting in front of the computer all day. I want to get relief from sore knees and occasional sore elbows. I want to improve my cardiovascular fitness.

That’s the challenge and here we go.
