So you want to have an organic garden to feed your family…
Most people understand the benefits of organic food. It really is better for you and it doesn’t contain a lot of chemicals from chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Many people are beginning to understand the importance of de-centralizing their food supply. Today, the average meal includes 1,400 miles of transportation. That’s a pretty staggering number when you think about the gas that’s involved in getting that food to you. Some prophets of doom have pointed out that as we reach worldwide peak oil, the diminishing oil supply will also diminish our food supply.
That’s why a lot of people are looking at ways that they can have their own organic garden to supply food for their families.
Aquaponics is an interesting alternative approach
Check out the photo at the right. This is an aquaponics system. Look carefully and you’ll see plants on the top and fish on the bottom. It’s a simple idea. The plants get their nutrients from the fish waste in a natural process called The Aquaponic Nitrogen Cycle.
Aquaponics has an advantage over hypdroponic gardening because it uses totally natural organic fertilizer (fish waste) instead of chemical fertilizers. It has an advantage over traditional organic gardening because you can produce much more food in a given amount of space and you can raise the fish for consumption if you like.
Aquaponics has it roots (pun intended) with the Aztecs. They built networks of canals and islands in the canals on which they grew their crops. The crops flourished in the nutrient rich soil from the canals. Other cultures used similar concepts.
