Coffee and Diet Soda Make you Gain Weight and Increase the Risk of Diabetes
Believe it or not coffee and diet soda — well, actually, anything containing caffeine — actually makes you gain weight. This sounds like some kind of nutritional heresy, but the science proves that it is 100% true. In fact, the scientific research supporting that has been available for the last 15 years. For those over age 23, who are losing the hormones that burn fat, weight gain is a real challenge. There is a growing incidence of people who are overweight and obese and one of the greatest problems contributing to that epidemic is that people don't like to change their habits. Caffeine is the most abused drug in the world (yes, by me too). We all like a morning jolt to get going in the morning. Some people get their jolt from a cup of coffee or a latte. Others grab a diet cola and a danish.
The thing that's important to know is that caffeine is like a magnet for the adipose tissue fat cells in your body. In fact, caffeine makes just about anything you eat within 2 hours of consuming the caffeine happily move to the fat cells. The problem is compounded when you use artificial sweetners. Your brain doesn't know about artificial sweetners. It only knows about natural sugars. So when you consume an artifical sweetner the taste mechanism says to the brain, "Here comes a sugar!!!", and the brain starts the insulin and fat storage mechanisms to deal with the sugar it's expecting. Research with diet soda shows that this effect happens even if you just swish the diet soda in your mouth and spit it out.
Should you take this seriously? You bet! Recent information indicates that the average person who drinks just 1 diet soda per day has a 60% greater chance of having Type 2 Diabetes. Weight gain and diabetes are just the tip of the iceberg. Caffeine has also been linked to osteoporosis, loss of nutrients, ulcers, high blood pressure, fatigue, and hypoglycemia.
There is a solution. Stay tuned for more information.
