We’ve already discussed the fact that excessive sugar in your diet is a huge problem… and one of the most popular additives by food manufacturers is high fructose corn syrup because, frankly, it’s a cheap way for food manufacturers to satisfy your taste for sweets. Well, now there is even a better reason to avoid high fructose corn syrup. Researchers have found detectable mercury in high fructose corn syrup. It turns out that mercury can be used to make caustic soda, which is one of the products used to make high-fructose corn syrup. While that is considered to be an outdated technology, it really isn’t known where food manufacturers get their high fructose corn syrup. It could be from anywhere in the world and, guess what, foreign suppliers probably aren’t using the most current mercury free technology. This also means that food manufacturers have been using tainted corn syrup in the past. The actual research study found mercury in about 31% of the food samples tested. According to WebMD the foods that were found to contain mercury are listed below.
- Quaker Oatmeal to Go bars
- Jack Daniel’s Barbecue Sauce
